La Paz and Aymara New Year’s Eve….
June 27, 2010 11:21 pm 59. BoliviaIt has been two weeks since, we arrived in La Paz. And somehow it feels like home here. Perhaps this is due to the climate of the city itself, but also thanks to Poles, whom we met here. And it is good to have a break from two wheels.
A few worlds about La Paz. At first glance, there is nothing special here. The town is situated on the slopes of the canyon, with jammed streets, with hundreds of mikrobuses, taxis etc. Steep narrow streets of the sidewalks, colorful markets and stalls with various goods, where every morning we go to the local desayuno (breakfast). The city draws and captivates. Because where else would you find “cholity” rhythmically dancing in the streets!

Day of the winter solstice (June 21) is the longest night in the southern hemisphere, and for the Aymara Indians the sunrise on this day is also the beginning of the new calendar year (year 5518 is now!). All New Year’s Eve party takes place in several different places in Bolivia, we have chosen the ruins of Tiwanaku complex, located about 80 km from La Paz. Tiwanku was previously the largest center of culture for the people of the Andean Aymara.

We have arrived on place of the whole the night before. Some people have already circled, on the main market local band was playing, but there was no special atmosphere of New Year’s Eve. We decided to twist a little and see what happens in other places. In fact, nothing happened. It was so cold, so a bottle of rum has warmed us up. We spent the night around the fires, drinking and meeting new people. It was freezing…

In the morning, we went in the direction of the ruins. There was so many others waiting for this most important moment of the night “the sunrise”. As soon as the first rays of the sun on the accused peoplle, those raised their hands up and began to catch the so-called. “cosmic energy”. And it was the coolest moment of the whole night. Later, we were able to enter to the center of the whole complex of ruins. There were held all sorts of ritual dances, omens of coca leaf… And about 9, got into a crowded bus and returned to La Paz.

Having a hot wine with Polish travellers, we met in La Paz

We will stay a few days more in La Paz and later we will enter Brasil.
