Flying high in Cape Town

6:44 pm 28. South Africa

Two weeks in Cape Town. A chance to relax, organise visas, service the bike and put on a few pounds around the waist in preparation for the long journey up the west coast of Africa. With relatively cheap food and alcohol (US$0.50 a beer!!), we haven’t held back :)
Apart from some general maintenance on the bike, we also changed the gear plates (gears were not disengaging), re-wired connections between alternator/regulator/battery, welded up cracks in the panniers and bought new tyres (Metzler Karoo T for the rear & Michelin T63 for the front). The TKC80’s had lasted all the way from Dubai (almost 22,000km’s!!). There wasn’t much left on them…

Also, the guys at Trac Mac (thanks David) were good enough to provide a free second-hand rear tyre, so we’ll only put the new tyres on at the Namibian/Angola border. Visas for Namibia were issued by the Namibia Tourism Board in one hour (easy). It won’t be so simple with the Angolan visa though. It is notoriously difficult to obtain and rejection of applications is common. We met three guys (Mark, Geoff & Migo) that had just finished riding down the west coast from Morocco (5 months) and they confirmed the Angolan visa application can be a nightmare. We’ll see.

We also met Ricky de Agrela. He’s not only ridden a motorcycle around South America, but he’s also flown his microlight around the world (www.safreedomflight.com)!!! He was good enough to take us for a joyflight around Cape Town. What an experience! We climbed through cloud, overflew Table Mountain and literally skimmed over waves at a beach.

Every minute was fantastic and will be long remembered.

P.S. We’ve added some new pics in the gallery. So check them out…

No tak, mało widoków z ziemi to sobie jeszcze polatać musieli.
