A village wedding, Angkor Wat and the border road from hell…
May 21, 2008 4:14 pm 05. CambodiaThe remainder of our time in Kampong Cham is spent resting, doing laundry and working on the bike - this includes scrubbing sticky clay off the chain and replacing the front brake pads, which wore quickly in the mountains of Thailand and Laos.
We also stumble on a local village wedding celebrated in ‘western style’.

We are offered beer, peanuts (the main meal had already been eaten) and invited to dance - males in one group and the females in the other. It’s the first time Kamil has been invited to the dance floor by a guy…

The highlight of the wedding was a food fight with the wedding cake the main ingredient.

At 8pm it was all over, the reception hall a huge mess. The small kids collecting empty cans must have made a nice profit…

We head onto Siem Reap and the famous Angkor Wat. The town itself is a huge dissapointment! To call it ‘touristy’ would be a huge understatement. Of course this is to be expected with the temples being such a huge draw card. We cannot ride into the Angkor Wat area on our bike, so we have to settle on being driven around in a tuk tuk.
Thankfully the large area over which the temples are spread, allows for some peaceful exploration and we get to see why its such a popular place…

Another thing we found in the markets of Siem Reap (for which it may not be as famous), were all sorts of ‘edible’ insects…

Originally we planned to ride back towards Phnom Pehn and then along the south coast to Thailand. However, we opt to ride west from Siem Reap and directly to Bangkok. This will allow us to get a head start on the paperwork required for shipping our bike to Japan.
Expecting an easy ride along a major trade route with Thailand, we are surpised by the 160km section to the Thai border. It takes us 5 hours to bounce over the pot holes and manouvre around the never ending detours. Our only consolation is that the pigs being transported on the back of scooters, are having a worse time of it…
